Mars 1
a.k.a.
1962 Beta Nu 1
Mars 2MV-4
Sputnik 23
00448

Country of origin: USSR
Launch date: November 1, 1962
On orbit empty mass: 893.5 kg

The launch of Mars 1 was successfully launched towards Mars.  A leak was detected from a orientation control valve, so the satellite was switched to gyroscopic stabilization.  On March 21, 1963 all communication was lost with the satellite.  On June 19, 1963 Mars 1 made its closest approach to Mars at 193,000 km, after which Mars 1 entered an elliptical orbit around Mars.  Having reached Mars, the Mars 1 spacecraft was unable to send any data or photographs back to Earth because of the communication problem. This was likely the result of its inability to maintain its orientation.
